I thought what MS was doing was trying to move the industry forward. It was probably to big of leap too soon. It doesn't matter because eventually we will pulled in to this new reality. Maybe not in 6 months but probably in the near future.
Sadly it most likely will happen, because as is apparent in most of these responses most simply don't understand the industries that are being destroyed for sheer laziness. Nor, does anyone seem to care. They must be evil corporations, because they make money off of used games! OH NOES!!!!!
Forget that people actually support families working at these places. Fuck them, the developers who hire hundreds of overworked underpaid code monkeys only to fire them upon the game's completion deserve that money!!! I mean they only got the money for the product off of the initial sale....why shouldn't they get a cut every time it's sold!?!?! I mean...that's their game dammit!!!
Seriously people....I mean...*sigh*. Doesn't matter anyway, I'm just crazy and will get flamed/ignored anyway. I am honestly starting to wonder why the hell I bother responding/posting at all.
If you're trying to make a point that all industry should stay around past its expiration date just because it creates jobs for people, then I think you're wrong. Progress happens, things change. People have to change with it and get different jobs. Pretty soon the people who stuff the Netflix disc envelopes will be out of a job as well. If you can't evolve and change with the times, then you are going to be taken out by natural selection.

Shadows right Azure, the longer compaies try to stick it out and not change with the times has a tendancy to lead compaies further into debt, then bancruptcy. Which means any benefits the company has in wait for it's employees goes to pay the compaines debts and not who it belongs to.
Loss of job and benefits, leaving you with COBRA coverage for a short time.
Liquidation of your pension.
If your position is retained then you face serious cutbacks in salary or benefits
So who in the end gets screwed over more?
At least those companies who face the end early on can give something back like a severance package and opportunity to move their 401k's to other locations.

MMO-studios hire people on project-basis. It's no different from what I used to do, taking contracts, bouncing from one job to the next. Once an MMO is in the wild, there's no need to keep a full developing-wing going, the focus shifts to community-management, server upkeep and whatever else you think of to secure the continuity of the product.
I guess most of that is also true for non-MMO titles. In the period between release and the pre-production of a new title, a bottomheavy staff isn't needed and the people who were hired for the completed project have to go look for a new employer.
I myself have done jobs in that model in transport and construction for many years and have never had a reason to complain about not being able to do anything someone else with a perma-contract could do. On longer contracts I could take vacation, take days off... whatever. On crunch-contracts I knew what I signed up for.
It isn't as if companies that do that are evil. A company is not there to hold your hand until you retire and to make sure that you could go camping in the summer and skying in the winter. Companies have no loyalty to you and you should have accordingly no loyalty to your employer if you work in that environment. That said, I did have a list of favorite employers I clamored to land contracts with, purely based on the contract-package quality they offered.
People who are good at what they do should even favor that model, it allows them to grow and to avoid ending up in stagnancy in work and prospects.

You do understand that our economy, and the economy of most of the countries that consol makers and game developers are selling to, is based on the Free Market Theory? Based on your response I would say your problem is more with how things are run in general rather than the game market and DRM.
In the end gamestop, gamefly and businesses like them will have to innovate and make deals with publishers to survive or go the way of many other businesses in many different sectors that just disappeared. Anyway, the whole ownership rights over digital goods hasn't really been worked out so there is that to look forward to.
here's a thought. Gamefly buys )NE copy of Halo, and 100 people rent it, and only 60% decide they like Halo afterall, and go buy their own MP copies...One rental copy encouraged 60 more buys that were on the fence...
And don't tell me people don't rent first to see if they want it, there's 1400 people here, and I hera all the time how they rent stuff first to see if it's what they want. Not opinion, not guessing, people I bump into daily, all the time...first hand knowledge...
Here's a thought, digital rentals by Microsoft. No waiting, no driving, just try the full game for a while included with Gold subscriptions.
Also, digital trade ins through Apps on the console too.
You like it? Its already installed, just buy it.
Of course, screams of dismay at the thoughts of freedoms being taken away will soon follow such thoughts and ideas.
Hostage down.
Hostage down
Fire in the hole.
Fire in the hole.
Hostage down..
Terrorists win.
What's with all the asshole comments coming from you today? I mean seriously, no one claimed anyone was taking away any freedoms etc. I think you need to relax and stop acting like the petulant child in your signature. You spent the last weeks telling all of us we were crazy and that everyone wanted this new revolution. Well you were wrong, the majority voted and you backed the wrong horse. So quit bitching about it and trying to make yourself feel better by pushing your bullshit on the rest of us.
I meant to say something in regards to this too, but completely forgot. The best was many years ago when you could stab the hostages down to 2% life, camp behind them, and wait for the CTs to give you a victory.
I don't understand the assumption that Gamefly replaces game sales with the same title. Where does that even come from?
If Gamefly buys 1,000 copies of Game X for launch, they clearly aren't going to have 1,000 copies of the that title 18 months later when it no longer has the same draw. They may replace the same title purchased in the first couple of weeks, but I really doubt they replace 1 in 3 in the next few weeks, and then none sold thereafter. Games have too short of a window where they are popular for this to be a viable business model -- people have already moved on to the next game.

Gamefly (or any distributor) will weigh the demand vs. the supply they have on hand. No distributor wants stock on hand for long lengths of time of product that has expiration date. So yes they might suddenly sell out of x percentage of product, but they will not buy enough product to get them back to their original stock numbers.
I know complete thread jack, but it is slightly related...sort of...
I get what you guys are saying (all of you), but when it comes down to it, publishers get virtually nothing to zero after a game has launched. Does not really matter if it is a rental company buying the games or Game Stop.
Full disclaimer, I worked for an computer hardware/software/entertainment (music, gaming, etc) distributor for almost 13 years.
Anyway what Dixon said. Lets try not to make individual attacks on people and yes my pants are fancy.
Azure, people did say their freedoms were being taken away. However, this forum is not where I read those comments.
I didn't say everyone wanted this, that would be an unlikely thing for me to say as I don't normally use absolute terms to describe something I already know as incorrect, unless I'm being very sarcastic.
I do think some of the things mentioned were a bit outside the realm of what would affect people.
If this is so upsetting to read, perhaps your final line of advice is best taken by the prescriber.
ive already installed a new fan into my laptop and hooked it up to the tv for netflix, last fm and steam. that was before they backpeddled on drm and always online, i seriously doubt im going to bother buying either console.
I absolutely agree with this article. The only good thing about the DRM bullshit was the game sharing with ten friends. It felt like a bribe, and I'm proud to be one of the vocal consumers who refused their bribe which exchanged customer rights for freebies. The freebie games were never even explained; there were probably restrictions on who could play each title, and I'd bet there would even be ads in the game telling you to buy the game for yourself.
I have to agree with Shadow on this one. Stifling progression for the sake of keeping jobs around is just bizzare and stands in the way moving forward.
We used to have Typists, Iceman, Milkman, Typesetters, Switchboard Operators, Elevator Operators, and countless others. Is your point really that we should keep this industry around just for the sake of jobs? Even my grandfather was an elevator operator for a few years as a young man in downtown Chicago, but I'm fairly sure if you ask him if he'd rather have automatic elevators he'd go with the elevators.
Technology will always make past job obsolete. There is a reason that news papers are struggling (and i work at one), but it doesn't mean we should stop the progress of the internet. Much like the newspapers, rental places will need to either learn to adapt or get out of the way.
According to this article, which is based on a non-sanctioned microsoft employee blog post, the Family Share plan wasn't going to let you share an entire full game with anyone in your family or friends. You would only be able to share a 45 minute 'demo' with them which woudl let you save your progress and continue when you purchased the full game. If true, more message blunders and possibly shady misleading statements by Microsoft about their console. I wonder if THEY even know WTF ONE can and can't do. Microsoft is coming off to me like a shady politician running an election campaign flip flopping here and there, using distraction tacticts and half thruthes to try and appeal to everyone to get their vote (in this case, pre-order).
Also it talks about xbox live as a social network, potentially to compete with twitter and facebook rather than work with them as partners.

yeah yeah, no name calling or the kitten gets it....
Always the panhandling optimist I see...
You never know when someone may have a new Challenger they wanna give away to a needy Mopar person ;) What? It could TOTALLY HAPPEN!

You know, if you're going to continue to advertise for Microsoft, Doodi needs to start charging your ass for ad time/access...

Get back on track and quit acting like dicks to one another. Be civil you fucks.
We're talking about video games here, not curing cancer.
Yeah, I have no desire to discuss any of this further...think I'll go back to the little racing room and leave all this to others...
Great article on the industry that needs DRM.
