Could this change the console landscape? I think so.

The power of a high end PC, an operating system designed for gaming...Yup. Sign me up!

How are they going to keep the price down? Titans are still close to $1000. I can't see it competing with consoles at twice the price. Nice hardware though.

Based on comments by Gabe last spring, he made it sound like there were going to be 3 general types of Steam Machines, at least that he could envision.  One low end that was mainly built for streaming from a higher spec PC running steam that would be cheaper than the next gen consoles, one mid range that would be comparable to the consoles that would be priced in the same ballpark, and one that was basically a high end PC running SteamOS that would be in the 1K plus range in price.  Check about a 3rd of the way down in this link:

http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/6/3958162/valve-steam-box-cake

I've just boosted my PC to be just a bit above the rumored next gen comparisons, so I'm real interested in the option that Gabe called "good" for streaming from my PC to the steam machine.

This also reminds me, I need to launch and play a game in Big Picture mode to get the Hardware Enthusiast badge and qualify for the beta. Need to do that this weekend so I can have a shot at one of those beta boxes.

Well I guess bulk buying will help out, the price point being touted is $1000 in total. If they manage that...Well it certainly rattles my cage. Been wishing for an OS that is dedicated for gaming that would run on a PC for ever. This seems to be what we have here, all the plus points of PC's and consoles in the one box, unlike traditional consoles, these can be upgraded, any OS you want can be put on it, (why you may want to change OS is a mystery if theirs works as advertised) I dunno there is still some time before they hit the shops so still much that can change. But I will be keeping an eye on these.

You know as I posted that I was thinking this may just be the first actual piece of gaming info ever posted here. But I doubt it will last. We are not renown for sticking to any subject for more than a few hours at best, that's what comes of a thead populated by some of the most unrepentant thread highjackers on the site smiley Loving Sad Otter.

I have really been enjoying PC gaming lately. The games are cheaper. They look better.  I don't know about the steam box thing though. Sounds like gabe is taking his displeasure with Windows to an extreme. I think he'll find it hard for 3rd parties to be interested in developing for Linux.

I downloaded the freebie Live Gold Halo3 and it kep me up too late last night. I'm playing it on easy as I absolutely HATE the control set up for movement in the game. I'm a mouse/keyboard shooter from waaaaaaay back and this set up simply does not compute.  But it's fun.

Thread title threw me when I checked my messages...the Steam Box is for hobos who can't afford a real PC, which is probably why it has piqued my interest. @OldBeans I can see you staying up all night to download Halo 3 (5.7gigs), but since you were playing through the campaign on easy you should have finished the game somewhere around 10:30 and still gotten a full night's sleep. 11

@ #SarcASSmoJo, how many times do I have to tell you, delegate delegate delegate. I started the download and went to bed. Told my boy to shut it off when it was done. As I started playing the thing at 10pm last night, umm no, not done yet.

Damn you got some well off Hobo's The top one is going to be over $1000 I recon, at least if they can get under that with a Titan and an I7 I'll be mightily impressed and throwing money at them.

Yup. Hoping to get a beta model, but if I don't, I'll throw together a low spec PC from some components I have at the house to try out the streaming capabilities of SteamOS at the very least. I used my board/CPU/Memory that I removed when I upgraded this summer to power my refurbished Arcade cabinet, or I would have used that to power a prototype.

Now that I think about it, the only thing I got off of Steam was Age of Conan and that was free to play. They do have Life on there though. I used to like the old playstation version that had the mini games in it.

Is this the steambox that Doodi and Derek discussed in the podcast a few weeks ago?

See thats why this thing will never replace consoles, because idiots like me who make up 90% of the population cant understand what it is, what it does and why I need it.

That would be the one. I cannot see the benefit of having one if it cost more than a PC, or both new consoles put together. The price point would have to be competitive, but Valve has yet to announce a set price and folks are speculating some crazy prices. Valve is aiming for a 2014 release, so now we wait.

Thanks Jones.

I listened to Doodi almost ejaculating with excitement about this. I'm sorry I just don't get it. It may be the most wonderful product ever devised but I guess its up to Steam to explain and sell it to idiots like me.  I just want a horse that can run faster.

Well Microsoft's horse broke a leg outta the gate, but I think it's feeling a little better now, not quite sure, hehe. Might have something to do with the guy jumping ship to Zynga, pure speculation though.
