We primarily use Mumble for game chat as its less taxing on processors than Skype but some use Skype as well.

I set everything up except for skype. Tell your son he needs to update the server cause it's saying "outdated client"

I think that may be on your end. You need to set your profile for snapshots. We are currently running 14w 31a. We were playing on it last night with no problems.
Edit: We always run the most current snapshot unless there is a problem with it, in which case we will roll back one.
