So...I have a 60 inch rear projection tv, cost? don't even ask. And I can't connect a console? FFS that is not replaceable for $179 from Walmart, or Asda as they are called here. I did suspect this would be the case and have looked at the cost of replacement, still in the regon of €1000, excuse me while I pull that out my Arse. Oh just picked up F1 2013 for the PC for £12...How much for the console version? Heh gonna be a long time before I buy one or other.

how old is your TV and what kind of connections are on the back?

Upfront I'll say it sucks if you can't connect it, but tech moves on eventually.  I don't think it's in the realm of sanity to expect all new connection format to work on all old tech indefinitely.  Really if your projection is 60" SDTV, you're already two generations behind on tech once the X1 one comes out, and almost ten years after HDTV became a standard.

Then again you could always try a conversion cable or box:

I don't know Shadow... He is really ahead, over and beyond the new consoles. Look closely at the forum picture. That is his gaming rig...

I think Knight is just making a point?

I'm going to assume there's a way to block followers with the new system. (I just scanned the explanation.)

Yes, you can block followers via privacy settings.  Not sure how robust the settings will be though.

It a simple display devise, a couple of bucks worth of components to put a scart or composite connection, voila backward compatible. They chose not to do so assuming as they assume so much that all their customers replace perfectly good Tv's every year or so. My TV works fine, it will connect to my computer (less than a year old) So as far as I'm concerned there is little excuse.

Still I was in no rush, but the time scale has just extended even further. When my TV stops doing the job, then it is time to upgrade not before just because games consoles wont connect. They could, they just chose not to...Maybe a third party interface might do an interim job right enough, but really...Like Church pointed out there are many like me,  I do kinda wish they just added that themselves.

the board they wanted to put into the box would have had to have the chips for those connections, and since most TVs these days don't come with connections other than HDMI, I think it was a fine design decision.

My Sony CRT in 2005 had an HDMI connection....

I really don't see it as "every couple years" - if you've bought a TV since 2006 you probably have at least one HDMI.  That's 7-8 years and i think that's acceptable.

Also, I can see them not wanting to have composite 480i access because most new games wouldn't code for that resolution or aspect ratio, so they would just get thousands of calls saying people can't read the text or their picture is stretched, or letterboxed.  HDMI/HD/16X9 was a big jump that won't be happening again soon.  Even with 4K and 3D, both use HDMI and have 16X9 ratio.

Well as long as your happy mate, by the way my TV does have 16:9 and several other aspects.

Sorry you never answered which HD connection your TV has.  There may be an adapter for it.

So Knight, that center screen in your rig's a rear projection get up? Or the one in your living room is? Because I can't see you setting up in the living room with that rig already built?

surpriseCan't see using an adapter for component resolution after having finally jumped to HDMI myself, it's soooo pretty...

Component is HD, and does 1080p.  You may be thinking Composite.  ;)

Correct, I'm only giving this 10% of my attention, there is a wife, four cats and a tv program taking the other 90.

Heh no the centre monitor is...A monitor. and the rig is in the living room along with the 60" rear projection. I do or did use the rig for xbox, but the loss of two screens and other toys that are PC only has left Mrs Knight the only one who uses it...on the TV.

Shadow mate one look at my gaming rig should tell you I am more than capable of sorting my own tech, I have more tech than you can shake a stick at. As LocGaw spotted, I was making a point, sure you are well healed enough to upgrade just to stay on the cutting edge, and so you can sit back and say "yeah great design guys, I'm all right Jack" But cash strapped parents who are facing their kids "needing" a new console are now faced with an extra buy, and be under no illusion for some this is really tough.  Me? I have been next gen gaming for a while, on triple screen in hi rez...And getting new release games at bargain prices...I'm all right Jack wink

Also known to have raised the blood pressure of many 2O4F peeps who’ve spent a lot of money on, I kid you not “official Forza”, racing wheels that will no longer work with the XOne.

Serenity now!

Now Parcels, that's not a true statement.

They never worked with the XOne.

Hands on with the X1 today in Chicago.  The Tour came through this weekend.

First impressions:

The triggers felt great. Very 360 like. The bumpers were harder to hit with your mid finger. You really have to commit with your finger tips crooked. The xbox button is flat and pushes in, it's not touch. The dash was limited in demo mode but the snapping was instant. Impressed with that.  The D-Pad is clicky awesome, and the vibration triggers are much better than I thought they'd be. I may play with vibrate on now.

I didn't play BF4, but it was the game of the show. It looked amazing. Definitely my launch game.

Kinect 2.0 was smaller than I thought it'd be.  Forza and Crimson Dragon used rumble triggers, that I played.  Played Forza, CD, Killer Instinct, Peggle 2, Lococycle.

Games I didn't play but were there - Ryse, Dead Rising 3, BF4, Kinect Sport Rivals, FIFA 14, Max  The Curse of Brotherhood, Skylanders

Most impressive visually:  BF4, Forza, Killer Instinct, Ryse - in that order.  The others probably could've been on 360.
