Well it's that time. Merry Christmas to all contributers to The Goodnight Thread. Hope you all have fun, imbibe to excess and get what you want under the tree
With you on that, updated my laptop to it, in a couple of days it updated and refused to run, I reset to the vanilla W7 it came with and am happier for it. Didn't like W8 at all. Why would I want to run essentially phone apps? I have a Smart Phone and Tablet to do that. And that interface...I know you can download something that will make ir look like W7 but...Nah W7 is fine, works, it's stable and I know my way round it.
Win 8 from phone to tablet/SURFACE to PC to essentially XBox. Loving it.
Admittedly, there is a little confusion for some people going between desktop mode and Metro.
Soon, people will wonder how the old folks ever dealt with those old style operating system interfaces.
No confusion on my part, just so much pointess stuff. I don't want a computer to look like a console or a phone, I don't want a touch screen or an OS that is optimised for one...Fortunatly I don't have one so everyone is happy
here's the big issue, the hold outs with XP are finally aving to jump to something new and the leap from XP to W8 is huge.
I have W7 at work and I l LOVE IT! And now having W8 at home, I can see some similarities, but really not feeling the love. Still strongly considering buying W7 Professional and putting it on my machine...
Thankfully I can turn around and ask my KIDS what the hell I need to do or where it is as they've already been through this process, BTW, they hate W8 too...they're both 19. I guess they're too old?
I agree with Knight, I don't need phone apps on my computer, it's really a down grade from where I sit. The only upside is you can obtain the "apps" as easily on the puter as the phone, but how great is access to something you DON'T want? AND I have already gone to 8.1, it's a little better, I guess...

I should have said 8.1 to be more clear.
My children are avoiding Win 8/8.1 because of Steam and old game compatability. Simple as that.
I don't know why people are on about phone apps. There is a Store full of free stuff and my wife and I have a handful of time waster games or silly things. It's just another asset to me. The big stuff, I pay for and it works just like before.
Well, to claim that it's people that aren't savvy that are having problems with Windows 8.1 is completely wrong. I'm a software developer/IT Project Manager and I think it's absolute crap for a desktop/laptop. The problems I've had with it:
It breaks network connections on many 3rd party VPN programs - which is the reason to use a VPN program.
It also breaks network connections on many 3rd party Virtualization programs - yet another negative impact to my job.
Metro to desktop is extremely clunky without a touch screen. It's not a confusion issue, it's just not user friendly without a touch screen. I've run a Surface tablet before, and it's actually quite intuitive there, so I've had experience with the touch functionality. (One note, the method to see what apps are open via touchscreen does need work.)
So, even outside of Steam and other games, there are plenty of reasons this OS is shaping up to be a turd.
I have just got a laptop for £20 the other day. Nothing special (1.6GHz, 512Ram, 80gig HDD) but it works and using XP again is like putting on an old comfy coat.
Is it me or is just about any software pre Win7 cocked up in Win8?
I DID manage to get Office 2003 to work on it though! (Of course I had thought I failed and then found it by accident and it seems to work just fine...)
The whole Office 365 thing really toasts my marshmallows, if you know what I mean...

FYI, Office 365 is reported to be very popular sales-wise.
I got it for our two new Win 8 laptops to avoid problems using touch screens. That aside, getting 5 licences for a $99 year and that we replace our laptops every three years, the cost per laptop is about the same as wholly owned software with the bonus of getting any new releases along the way. My son's PCs are licensed too.
Office reverts to a free reduced feature mode when the license lapses. Not the end of the world.
All I did was project ahead what our normal habits are and 365 fits quite well.
I'm not suggesting my solution is a fit for everyone. It's not a bad solution either.
Well just a few hours and it's another arbitory occation...a new year, so as it is tradition I wish all contributers a Happy New Year and look forward to another 365 days of pointles posts, tiffs, chuckles and whatever ever else ends up on this most epic of threads 3,656 posts, of no value whatsoever. You make me very proud :)
Wine for NYE meal, Rum drinks, snacks, NYE TV shows and headache pills at 4am. Just tired today. Not too bad.
FYI. It was -16 C during the local outdoor NYE TV show. It's always amazing how this show goes on no matter the weather. One year, snow was piling up on keyboards and drums.
Blizzard tonight. Foot of snow, cold, high winds. Normally this would only be the second time my blower is put into action. This will be the fourth outing of the season. I have to get more gas, just in case.
Happy new year!! I'm glad I found this thread. You guys are awesome :D
So I bought my very first new car yesterday!!! I've neverrrrrr had a brand new car. It's nothing to brag about as far as make and model, but I'm all excited to be a grown up finally ;)
My only problem with my new car is my mom. She is:
1. Picking it apart. LITERALLY. Scratching at my leather seats because she thinks she sees a stain, jerking the visor down and around, picking at the door panels, etc. She is a VERY negative person, and is convinced there's something wrong with my car, and its up to her to point it out to me.
2. also just generally rough on cars. Slams doors, throws her keys in the drink holder, slams the glove box shut, etc.
She had a stroke a few years ago, and ever since then she gets her feelings hurt REALLY easy. She also can't see anything she does as wrong, and accuses everyone else of being angry, unreasonable, and mean. So if I say "please stop picking at my car. Please take it easy on the brand new car" she gets upset, says I need to calm down, she's not doing anything wrong, etc. I have to drive her places sometimes, and my car is the only one we have she can ride in (fractured her spine five times last year). So....I'm either a horrible, mean daughter who hurts her feelings or I let her beat the shit out of my car. Ugh.
I like!

Merry Christmas to those celebrating.
Wife, mother, kids all in bed asleep. Sitting here sipping a beer and too lazy to turn on the xbox.
Have a very Happy Christmas everyone and peace and goodwill to all.
Hope everyones safe happy and warm!
Morning all..
BTW, I HATE WIndows 8...I'm just saying...

I will say this, SOME of the ads on here have gotten a tad more entertaining...who's playing this crap to get them to target us?
Because most of that free stuff is stuff that also runs on Phones and Tablets, and is just as free on them.

I too find Windows 8 such a ball ache to use. (On none touch screen stuff)
Best part was when my gaffer got a Win 8 laptop (After I told him how good it wasn't) but hes the boss so he knew better.
3 weeks later the laptop was on my desk with just a note - Win 7 Today!
Anyway Windows 7 64Bit FTW!!
Ha ha. Class.
I wonder how many people will be moving out to California this year after they watch the Rose Parade?
Belated happy holidays to everyone!
Its balls hot here.
Windows 8 makes me want to punch babies.
I have a mad crush on this guy on Jeopardy. Holy crap he has a big, sexy brain!!
I think that's about it lol!
Win7. I can't even type the name of that other version without filling with rage.
Begins with a V?
That was by far the worst.
I prefer 3.1 over that.
I have just got a laptop for £20 the other day. Nothing special (1.6GHz, 512Ram, 80gig HDD) but it works and using XP again is like putting on an old comfy coat.
Brings a tear to my eye

I can see that, I'm the other end of the spectrum. I buy one version every 5 to 10 years...depending on when it becomes unusable.

Hah! First Post of the New Year and the first "Good Morning!".
I survived amateur night as we call it around here.
Wine for NYE meal, Rum drinks, snacks, NYE TV shows and headache pills at 4am. Just tired today. Not too bad.

Yes, we might get a bit this evening, freezing rain to rain to snow and a drop from low 40's to 16 degrees. Might ice skate to work tomorrow.
Happy new year!! I'm glad I found this thread. You guys are awesome :D
