Well not got new toys yet...aside from the first, the new iPad Air 2 that I am posting with now. That was a fun thing to set up. Being my first IOS devise I could not work out how to enter the password for my wifi network during set up...So I disabled the password but forgot to tell the router I did not want one. So it adds one of its own without me realising. Net result I was locked out on all my devises. After some stamping around and rude words it occurred to me to connect my computer directly to the router bypassing the wifi. Phew! by this time I had worked out how to enter a wifi password on the iPad so reset it and off we went again. Everything went smoothly from that point on and I was soon playing with the new toy. Siri is rubbish, Google is much better, and much fun was had pitting one against the other. Now it may be I am more used to android but it seems a better OS, more easy to use. On saying that I am liking the iPad, I went for the top of the range and it is a very fast and nice to use device. Of course it won't really come into its own until the studio kit arrives and it gets its proper job there. So I now have a slew of smart tech, with the nexus 9, Samsung galaxy note 4 and the iPad Air I think all bases are covered.
A new high "techy" thing is always cool. Glad you figured out the direct connect thing with your router. That is how my desktop is hooked up to the router and even though I normally access the router wireless via my laptop, I have had occasion to use the desktop to router connection when things have gone wonky with the laptop.
On a slightly different note, Wednesday is the target date for Windows 10 availability. I have become a little concerned with this because, unlike the Windows 8 upgrade, M$ is not offering an application compatibility application. Who knows what software, applications, and drivers will not work with the new operating system. I have an extra Windows 8.1 laptop that I am planning on giving to my sister when we next meet up (I live in Virginia and she lives in Florida) so I will use that one as a "guinea pig" and report my experiences back here. Stay tuned.

Yeah I am a real tech lover I have to admit...But as I sit here at my race rig typing this it just dawned on me...This computer is hard wired to the router, I could have done it all from here LOL. Ah well. I plan to use my Laptop as a test bed for win10 if I like it I may get an SSD and install it on that to test it on that on my rig computer, I'll dual boot and that way no nasty shocks.
Nice work there oldschool, my only attempts at carpentry go back to my school days, I don't recall having too many skills at the time.
Knight's all high tech and I'm out in the woodshed...
This is the second one of these I've made, the first was back in 1993...it's still alive and well, but the wife needed a couple of these for her office, so I've more to make.
What's the going rate on a hand made stout step stool?
I'm going to make a few more of these and try different finishes, maybe do one with mineral spirits and then stain, one with just linseed oil, no stain, see the differences. that one was straight stain with no conditioner, and it's a soft wood, so the stains a bit uneven/rustic.
Windows 10 not ready as of 6 AM Eastern. And no, I didn't get up for that
Correction, now that I have to get ready to go out for the day, the update is available. Figures. I will do this when I get home later this afternoon.
You may not have gotten up for that but clearly you have some unsettled issues with new technology. Slow down, deep breaths, think of your blood pressure.
That's a fact. I have a desktop and 2 laptops, 1 for me and 1 targeted for my sister. I wanted to upgrade the one for my sister, but it hasn't downloaded for it yet -- or my desktop, just my laptop which is upgrading now -- looks like two hours for the upgrade. The install files have to download via Window Update before one can upgrade, so I am keeping the desktop and my sister's laptop fired up for awhile.

s
I'm going to see if I can download it tonight I got an email earlier, last night was a fail on Microsoft's part
You definitely want to wait until the little "Windows" icon in the right side of the task bar says it's ready to go. It came up on my desktop today so I will do the upgrade there tomorrow.
Given the vast majority of people are upgrading from W7 that is not common knowledge Deep no. Didn't bother reading the article, just skipped to the things needed to do to stop all that stuff. If your gonna pick holes then at least post a link to a better article, till then there is good info there to get to the heart of the matter and stop ad targeting, auto downloads and such like stuff. Maybe Deep will link to one he feels is better and a little less scare mongery, though I would expect most here would just ignore that and do as I did and skip to the where and how and as the article itself says...Make their own mind up as to what they disable.
I shall retract my "better articles statement". They are all the same. Click bait, riding on the coattails of possibly the largest software release the planet has ever seen.
The scare mongers are in full swing and I'm pissed off at them, even before they've hit their stride.
Heh well as you were folks, like I said if like me you hate ad targeting, need to control updating and auto downloading skip to the bottom of the link and make your own minds up what you are happy to have going on under the hood. Aside from that I have to say I quite like the new OS, maybe a little over minimal in places, but I guess that helps with the smaller footprint that is well overdue.
Here in Canada, Drones halted some of the aerial forest fighting efforts a week back. Very serious business. It brings to mind the possibilities of improper use of drones in everyday neighborhoods. I'm sure we need additional security regulations put in place for them. At the very least each should have a black box and central registration.
It's all too easy for nefarious individuals to misuse drones anonymously. Government controlled ones are the least of my concerns.
Being a drone owner myself...First the vast majority are responsible and safety aware flyers. Like any tech idiots can spoil it for the rest, but nefarious individuals? Really? You happily have a go at concerns over a new and suspiciously free OS (nothing in this world is free) and then perpetuate the drones are scary myth. Are you also to register telescopes and binoculars in case they are used for peeping? Yes I agree in the case you are citing it takes stupidity to quite a level, but it's less anonymous than you may think. Most people that fly irresponsibly get caught, often because they are silly enough to post footage on social media. Personally I think the flight logs should be public, drones communicate over wi-fi how hard would it be to piggy back onto that and find the home base, it's stored on the craft for the return to home function. Problem solved, if caught flying in illegal or safety sensitive air space? Dispatch law enforcement to the home location, ensure the drone returns immediately, confiscate the drone and arrest the pilot. Target offenders, not the innocent.
Simmer down Mr. Knight, relax some. Me thinks you may have slightly misinterpreted and/or assumed things from DEEP's rather innocent message. He's Canadian for Christ sake, he would never intentionally insult anyone or spew political rhetoric.

I think nefarious individuals are the only people Parcells is concerned about with technology. Not like they haven't abused tech in the past, they're doing it right now, its called a typical day on Wall Street. If you can't think of a villainous scheme that makes use of drones I'd say you wouldn't make a very good criminal.
Hows the community leadership thingy going Knight?
Ha ha Parcells, that was a calm post, I thought we had been around long enough to spot when I was...lets say, less than calm. I don't think I misinterpreted Deeps comment...Funny I remember almost exactly the same "concerns" from the great and the good over CB Radio in the UK some decades back, it was going to have all kinds of terrible repercussions when it got into the hands of the great unwashed. It never really happened and the great unwashed soon bored of it and went onto the next big thing. Same will happen with drones.
Happy that you think I would not make a good criminal, a misconception that kept me out of prison in my wilder early years. Of course I can think of many a villainous scheme for a drone, or a gun, or a mobile phone, or a computer, or a car, a lorry, a plane or any number of things up to and including a green house. No more villainous use of drones indeed than perpetrated by the military. I push against the assumption that everything should be controlled...Just in case.
The Community Leader thing is going well, no dramatic outcomes as yet but a steady stream of support.
There was a drone flying over our golf course yesterday. Then I spotted some "Hooters" girls driving a beverage cart for a golf outing. That explained everything.

That's what they want you to think but It could be an elaborate ruse.

let me know how it's working if you get it
Desktop upgraded with no issues.
my PC is upgraded, so far no issues
Huh, posted a long post that seems to have got lost...But the most important part was this link to dealing with privacy on W10 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-privacy-settings/
I guess the author didn't know Solitaire already had targeted ads on Win 8 and Win Phone 8?
Scare mongering and click harvesting. Much better articles exist on the subject.
We can refuse to become part of the Internet mob.

Here in Canada, we're into a Federal Election. The longest since 1872. I'll be particularly unsettled for the next 3 months.
Maybe I can drop in with related daily news items.
This thread is whatever folk want it to be mate, feel free to post that if you wish.

Wife and I had never seen Game of Thrones. We started from the beginning a few days ago. Quite entertaining.
Too much nudity and sex but the ladies look spectacular, so I forgive the show's over indulgence in such matters. Spartacus and Rome were similar.
