I never could get into metal, and it had nothing to do with it being too loud... I have always prefered to understand the lyrics to a song when I hear it.

That is actually quite common. Metal music has always been more about music than lyrics. Whcih is why it generally doesn't fair well in the mainstream. It seems that it usually appeals more to musicians than non-musicans also.
