A day off, kind of...

Yesterday was the last official day of classes at Right Management.  The class was about interviewing and salary negotiations.  Even though I technically have the day off, I need to organize the loads of hand-outs we received over the two weeks.  Then I need to complete all of the outside assignments we were given, including finishing the 20 hour career self-assessment.  Lastly, I need to sit down with the list of about a hundred behavioral interview questions ("Tell me about a time when...") and come up with responses to each of those.

Personal Website?

The lead instructor / consultant at the outplacement firm I'm working with said now days in the job hunt, the big thing is creating a "personal brand". Resumes, she says, are more just requisite paperwork. What sells you is truly marketing and branding yourself to distinguish you from everyone else.

To that extent, she recommended I create a personal homepage not just highlighting my career and skills in Lean Six Sigma, but also to establish those things that make me unique -- such as my boxing, illustration, and community service work.

Fingers crossed

Last night, I got a call from the lead "talent recruiter" for Rockwell Automation.  We had a great conversation that ended with him telling me that he would have my resume on the top of the pile of the VP of Human Resources desk first thing this morning.  He said that I may get a call for an interview as soon as this afternoon.  I will be in an executive networking meeting this morning, but this afternoon, I'm going to have to do as much research on Rockwell as possible.

Busy times

I know I haven't blogged for a while. I've been busy working with this outplacement operation, Right Management, taking classes on networking, resume building, interviewing, negotiation, etc. I was referred to an executive recruiter who is working with Rockwell Automation. They are looking for some senior Quality / Six Sigma / Lean people and I read one of their job postings that looks like it was written specifically for me. Anyhow, I left a message for this guy today -- and he does a lot of work with Right Management, so hopefully I'll hear from him soon.

Paradox or stupid saying?

I was in a panic earlier this afternoon.  As I was completing a career self assessment, I was unable to find a letter of recognition that the CEO of our business had written to me last year.  I recalled the saying "It's always in the last place you look".

Well no shit.  I mean, when I find it, I'm going to stop looking.  So naturally, the last place I look -- even if it's the first place I look -- will be where I find the thing I'm looking for.

Got my first lesson

Mark Kistler sent me the rough draft of the first two chapters of his upcoming book, You Can Learn How-To-Draw in 30 Days! last night.  The lessons are definitely geared toward the adult who is just trying to draw for the first time.  Mark wants me to time how long it takes me to complete each lesson, as his promise to busy adults is that it will only take a 20 minute commitment per day to learn how to draw.  I'll get the first lesson completed and I'll post the results later today.
