Success!

The new home gym is officially put together, cables and everything.

In celebration, the better half and I went out to dinner...although we did show an incredible amount of moderation in ordering only one pitcher of Anchor Steam.

Seriously though, we went out to dinner only because we hadn't bought the weight stack yet. Even in as poor of condition as I'm in, I can still handle just the plate carriers with relative ease. OK, with comparitive ease. OK, it's still an exertion, but a man's got to have goals.

Hefty Fine

I was a fat little kid. Not fat by today’s standards (good grief), but fat by 20 years ago standards. If I was that same little kid today, I’d be merely average. I struggled with my weight all the way up through high school. At that time, I started playing sports and lost the pounds. Kept them off pretty much through college...gain some during the academic year, lose them over the summer.

Membership had its privileges

I was partaking in one of most my cherished activities last night, paying bills, when I came across something on my credit card bill that made me laugh. On the top of the bill was a perforated panel (the one sometimes used for courtesy checks) with the following message:

We appreciate your business. If we can make your card membership more rewarding, do not hesitate to contact us.

What a difference four years make

French President Jacques Chirac today awarded Clint Eastwood (yes, that Clint Eastwood) a Knighthood in the distinguished Legion de Honour today. The Legion was created by Napoleon (yes, that Napoleon) in 1802 to recognize outstanding service to the French Republic. The Legionnaire need not be a French citizen. In fact, other distinguished Americans having received the award include Jerry Lewis (yes, that Jerry Lewis) and others that I don’t care enough about to look up.

It’s a fairly accepted nugget of knowledge that the American government always knows what’s best for us.

-Often time they’re probably right: it’s mandatory for automakers to install seatbelts.

-Sometimes they’re wrong: playing poker on the internet is morally unconscionable, yet lotteries and gambling in Vegas is cool.

-More than a few times, they’re just plain asinine: it is unlawful to sell a toilet in the US for installation in a residential property that uses more than 1.6 gallons per flush
