Pick a side man! ;)

Haha.  I don't have a side.  I actually preordered the PS4 initially before I saw the launch lineup.

I just want the most I can get for my money.  Money will be tighter now that I have a son coming in December, which is right after November where I'll be spending $500 for a box, plus games.

surely you jest.  that's probably all i'll be doing.  My wife goes to bed at 10 and I game from 10P-2A usually.  During that time, it'll be gaming with one ear on the monitor (or a bassinet right next to me with my headphones on, lol).  After that, it's her shift.  angel

Ha ha. I remember trying to play Modern Warfare 2 shortly after my second son was born. He started crying everytime I started a game.  By the time he was fed, changed and back to sleep I couldn't be bothered playing anymore.  You may not have as much gaming time as you think!

That's not what I was laughing about...

You may find out that you don't actually use the monitor all that much the first few months - because you will be there tending to all those newborn needs every couple hours. And you will be too tired in between to do anything fun.

But you do establish a routine and get back to your hobbies over time, just in more limited time slots. You may have a hard time believing this now, but the anticipation of "missing out" on your hobbies/free-time is worse than when it actually happens.

Sorry to go off topic...

Yeah, this is first child syndrome, I mean, optimisim, yeah that's it! cool

We had twins, so gaming time was severely impaired, so was reading time, sleeping time, whoopie time, etc time...

After the baby gets it's routine down you'll be fine. My girls were great about that.

Only good thing for us was being twins, they kep each other company/occupied and slept better, easier, longer faster perhaps than a lone baby. Routine was easier to establish and miraculously they stayed on the same schedule. At 4-5 weeks they actually were sleeping mostly through the night, so I'd say we were really lucky there.

Now, diapers on the other hand...

i'm not worried.  whatever happens will happen.  I just don't sleep much as it is (5-6 hours a night on a good night) so it's not a big deal to me.

For anyone interested in RYSE, looks like it's going pay to win.

We'll be paying for virtual petrol (gas) in Forza next FFS.

Or you'll be able to buy higher octane to give you the edge in MP.

Hmmmm, wouldnt that be fun.

Don't be surprised to see more microtransactions popping up in games.  It's how they make their money since most devs only have a small window to earn money off of people (since nowadays it's literally a battle to keep a game in the disc tray).  They release DLC to have you hold onto it, and with microtransactions, they, for one, make more money, and two, hope you keep the game since you've invested additional money into it.

I don't mind microtransaction systems as long as it doesn't break the game.  From what I've seen on the Xbox, they haven't done that yet.  PC, you end up with a lot of pay to  win games.  With Mass Effect 3, you could end up getting more items, but it was all random in what you got.  And I've know people to complain that they didn't get "X" new thing from the latest DLC even after buying 20 equipment boxes.

So, don't be surprised.  And as long as developers do it right, i.e. mainly for cosmetic things and maybe a few boxes of random loot, then it should be fine.

Remember in the SNES days when you bought a cart and it was complete?  No patches, no updates, no DLC.  Game companies still made profit and had to make sure the game was perfect and filled out at launch.  Then people bought it it if it was a good game.  They still rented and sold them to used places.

Tech has evolved, but so has the cost of the tech.  I understand they are a business, but squeezing blood from a stone may not be the best way to get consumers to buy your product.

Your point is right, (but to take a bit off your stone example) you can't know how much blood is left in the stone until you squeeze it.

In order for devs to keep making money after release date, they need to just squeeze without breaking it. Gearbox and the Borderlands franchise are doing a good example of that..

Forza's had their car packs, which doesn't seem to break anything, but I guess a good example of how not to would be Diablo 3 with their auction house ability to buy gold and items directly from the auction house, you could get whatever your pockets/mentality could justify...

Precisely. XP boosts which would help you progress faster and get unlocks faster are not inherently bad either but are common.

Also note how much money publishers dump into marketing and how much risk they take in new IP. Microtransactions are a good way for consumers to vote with their dollars by saying this game was well worth the initial $ I spent.

True but that has snowballed due to their own choices.  They don't HAVE to market that way or spend that much money on the tech.  Games still sell even if they are simple - look at Minecraft or Fez for example.

It's not the consumer's fault companies decided every game has to be uber graphics and tech.  Scale it back a bit and get back to the basics.  Not every game has to be Gears or Skyrim.  Also marketing works best on the dashboard, IMO.  If it's there in a cube you'll see it more than people who skip commercials on their TVs or who DON'T go to game stores to see the ads there but just buy stuff online from Amazon.

Word of mouth and reviews are the best form of advertising because they're free and don't try to market - people trust that more.  In order for both of those to work you have to firstly make a GOOD game.  If it's not a good game, don't make it because it's going to be a waste of money.

Battlefield 3 had the abaility to unlock certain equipment and weapons early if you paid extra money.  I don't know anyone that paid it but it didn't bother me that the option was there. Sometimes it can be frustrating when you pick up a game late and everyone else has all the unlocks and you feel at a disadvantage.  I guess this is different to pay to win since it's more levelling the field rather than giving "payers" an advantage.
