Parcells, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm betting you've heard this before.

Don't show me the problem without offering up a solution. Horribly paraphrased perhaps, but I know you've heard this somewhere.

My OPINION people, is simply this.

Post a clearly worded policy, and then hold your moderators AND posters to it. I would also SUGGEST that the decisions made by the moderators be agreed upon BY THE MODERATORS in mass, quietly, before actions of a serious nature are taken.

At work we segregate the problematic parts/materials, protect the immediate customer, and then identify the root cause and correct the source  hpefully preventing further occurences of similar nature/source.

IE: Segregate the problematic post (delete, reword, whatever as quietly as possible) warn the poster in private and if it is a SERIOUS or repeated issue, gather the wagons and make a decision, doesn't have to be unified, but a majority, and then carry it out, again in private, as suggested way up above somewhere. that way the thread is cleaned, if warranted, the poster is warned immediately, and the decision, if it's a big one, isn't dropped on one lone ranger, who just might not want to make it on his own anyway?

Just leaking random thoughts. I know anything organized reduces the fun factor and makes it way more like work, so I'm patently opposed already and I suggested it, but hey, IF it's needed, I'm willing to discuss it.

I like to stuff Pork N Beans up my nose. If I can get just the right amount of nasal suction it's like having a built-in,one-at-a-time bean dispenser.

Segregate posts for deletion or rewording? Some folks take that more personally than the argument itself. I take it up the ass all the time...

Jones, clearly you don't want an adult conversation, or you're just trying, in your own way to make a point, but whatever...

You guys haven't missed much....we've been talking about dicks for a couple of days now. The whole site voicing opinions about how dicks should be dealt with, what they would do with a dick, and dick posts. If we had any homophobes creeping around, they're gone now.

Rules. I want rules. I understand Doodirock doesn't want much in the way of rules. I want to give his new to this site Ignore features. I hope it works. I also hope Twitter dies in a fire.

DEEP, clearly you're a troublemaker. cool We've already stated there are to be no rules in here! Have you read any of this thread?

EDIT: On a serious note, I find it hilarious (see what I did there) that this discussion ends up here in this thread of all places...

EDIT #2: I'm with ya on the twitterage...hope it takes Miley Cyrus with it...

You put words in my mouth there Parcells, and that I don't apreciate, sure here are the guidines I used for another forum, they were posted publicly so eveyone could see. Not saying these are right for here, but you asked so I deliver.

The biggest goal of the moderator is facilitating civil discussion. This is achieved in several ways:

limiting trolling. trolling can be anything from posting incendiary comments to just making one-line quips in a thread without contributing to the discussion at hand. Or rambling on at length about nothing, re posting the same thoughts without regard for actually having a conversation. Post deletion and temporary bannings are good for dealing with this.

removing offensive comments or hate speech. you want your community to be inclusive for all. Mod options: delete all offensive comments, drop a note to the offender and tell them to clean up their mouths. If they continue, ban them.

No flames or personal attacks. Also, no use of offensive language. posts are deleted and users are given a time out.

Be an example. Mods and admins should not be flouting rules just because they can. That goes for avatars, .sig files, posting etiquette, the works. Also, be fair in all our dealings with friend and foe alike.

If you are unsure about a thread or post, lock it until the situation has been reviewed by at least one other mod.

If a Mod feels a post needs editing for language or offencive/inflammatory text, if possible request the poster to edit the post him/herself. If it needs immediate action then add a note to the post explaining it has been edited by a Moderator and PM the poster with an explanation

If a thread is moved into a new topic use the "leave a ghost" option and let the ghost remain for a few days so people using it can find it.

In light of recent events, anyone winding up a member in such a way as to try to elicit or provoke a negative response, will be liable to a time out of one week, rising to one month for a repeat offense and finally account deletion.

Now these have some stuff that does not apply here, like language. Here we are relaxed about that. But I'm sure you can see that most situations we had to deal with were covered by a set procedure that everyone could see. Mods and members alike had input. It was not fun, it is mostly thankless, and any idea I may be trying to get my feet under the table in some power hungry madness anyone might have? Forget it, been there, seen it, done it.

I only post this because you asked and do not sugest a, none of these have been done, b, this is new, c, it's a magic bullet, d, this is right here e, it is perfect. But it was done to give a framework to work in during a real tough time for the forum, and it worked for that. Now pull it to pieces if you wish, it matters not because as a set of guidlines it served it's purpose.

Really this is the last I want to say on the subject, and I didn't really want to keep it going.

PS. I miss racing with you guys too...

If the offending post is deemed detrimental to the site (?) it should be segregated from that which it would hurt, the customer as it were, the site. I guess that would be deletion. I suppose if the posse decided it wasn't detriemental there's an arguement for putting it back, I dunno.

The other option is to leave it and post that it's been deemed harmful/against the posted rules and then post the ensuing action taken against the offender, you know, like hanging them in the big oak in the town square for all to see, but I don't think that's the way we wanna go. It would prevent the deletion you find so distasteful though. cool

Oldschool, Oldschool, Oldschool, haven’t you learned yet you cannot possibly win an argument with the Parcells. How can you possibly debate someone that figures it’s perfectly legit to reference Star Trek to support his argument? The answer is you cannot so why do you keep trying? Furthermore I’m Canadian and I might smother you to death with socialism values and no one wants that either so I ask you again…why?

I have heard the saying “bring me solutions not problems” but I don’t necessarily agree with it. Mostly because two heads are better than one so if the one person who identifies a problem is unable to identify an appropriate solution why not engage others to open up more possible solutions? The Next generation episode “A Matter of Honor” portrayed my belief. In this episode the federation was running an officer exchange program. Riker was on board a Klingon ship and a Benzite ensign was assigned to the Enterprise. Early in the episode shortly after the officer exchanges took place the Benzite noticed a virus attacking the Klingon ship’s Hull which was a significant problem.

The Benzite culture believes in the adage bring me solutions not problems so he wasn’t about to tell anyone about this virus until he come up with a solution of his own which was contradictory to Starfleet protocols. By not divulging the problem to his superiors the Enterprise was unable (had no idea) to warn the Klingon ship about the virus. In the interim the Klingon’s found the virus eating at their hull and since the Enterprise was the only ship recently in close proximity to the Klingon vessel they wrongly assumed the virus was an intentional plant by the federation. In the end everything worked out fine but because the Benzite’s believe in this only bring me solutions drivel the years of peace between the Klingons and StarFleet was almost lost because of a simple misunderstanding.

Thanks for understanding. You guys are the best!

Some people enjoy making others feel bad. I don't know why that is. It's just so weird.

Also on the interwebz people don't believe in the idea of common courtesy to another person. Debates turn into personal attacks just because of a disagreement. Some feel that when somebody posts an opposing view that they must then lash out and make their point louder. In my opinion, it's that kind of behavior that drives folks away.

It is the internet effect, somehow the usual rules of social interaction seem to be suspended, it's all to do with the anonymity and lack of real world consequences...Maybe for some it is a way to compensate for a lack of control in their real lives...I dunno, all you can do is live by your own standards, and not worry too much what some nameless, faceless poster on a forum thinks of you.

Ha ha ha ha. This argument is all very funny. The whole debate started a few days about how to get and retain people on the site. Without users on the site I would suggest its a little pointless discussing moderating their comments.

Now back to your little otters, I'm much too mature for that. Just to prove it heres a picture of Batman fighting a shark with a lightsaber.
