Vacation, the good and the bad

I just got home from a few days of vacation at Wisconsin's largest waterpark.  It feels good to be back home and I'm looking forward to getting back into Bioshock.  On the bad side, I have a big mound of receipts to enter into Quicken and I'm not looking forward to seeing what "the damage" was from this trip.

Another of my early drawings

I actually did this one prior to the alien below.  I was learning shading, but hadn't given enough thought to the light source.  Notice that the shadows on the feet are going in a different direction than the ones on (and in) the cylinder.  I had also put in some "action lines" that don't really serve any purpose.

I'm heading off on vacation for a few days with the wife and kids, but when I get back, I'll start posting some of my better drawings as my skills improved.

First of the drawings

Following up to my blog below, I will soon be "beta testing" the forthcoming book by Mark Kistler which is designed to teach adults how to draw/cartoon in 3D. Before watching Mark's show, The Imagination Station, I was pretty much limited to drawing stick figures. I've done a handful of his TV lessons, and attended one of his "art camps" this summer with my kids. Going forward, I will post in my blogs some of the drawings I've made so far, and once I start doing the actual lessons for the book, I'll post those as well.

So, here is one of my first drawings...

The best beta testing gig ever!

No, not the CoD4 beta. I have been asked by Mark Kistler to "beta test" his next book. For those of you unfamiliar with Mark, he is the host of the PBS show "The Imagination Station" and has been teaching children how to draw for over 20 years. He has 3 best-selling books on how to draw cartoons in 3D. His new book, "Yes - You Can Learn to Draw in 30 Days!" will be geared toward adults.

Redneck rummage sale

I mentioned in a previous blog that Thursdays are trash pick-up day in my neighborhood, but it's also the day of what I call the "redneck rummage sale".  Usually between about 6am and 7:30am, folks show up in my neighborhood and scavenge through the stuff people throw away.  In a way, it's kind of cool because if you want to get rid of something large and that the garbage man wouldn't normally take, all you have to do is set it by the curb.

Bioshock - freakin' my shit out

I can't remember the last time I played a game that required me to take a break just to gather my nerves.  After that first Big Daddy battle, holy shit...  Now every time I hear that low pitched grumble, I almost wet myself (in a bad way for a change).  I'm not prepared psychologically to face another Big Daddy tonight.
